The Campbell Foundation Awards $50,000 in
“Holiday Hugs” to HIV/AIDS Service Organizations

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- Dec. 11, 2017 – This year has been particularly difficult for many nonprofit service organizations that serve HIV-positive individuals and their families.

 

Budget cuts, natural disasters and increasing demands for services from the populations they serve has left many organizations with their own budget shortfalls as 2017 comes to a close.

 

Every year since 1996, The Campbell Foundation, a Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit organization that funds HIV/AIDS research, offers a “holiday hug” in the form of unrestricted grants to those organizations, allowing them to use the money where it’s most needed.

 

This year, the foundation is pleased to announce it is awarding $5,000 to ten nonprofits for a total of $50,000. This brings the foundation’s overall funding to direct service organizations to nearly $1.3 million.


“When people think about those with HIV/AIDS, they often think about their health-related concerns. However, many patients and their families require assistance in other areas such as housing, food, counseling and education,” said The Campbell Foundation’s Executive Director Ken Rapkin. “The funding that we provide to these organizations through our end-of-the-year “holiday hug” program goes toward helping them fulfill their mission of providing such critical services.”

The following organizations are this year’s recipients:

“The Campbell Foundation’s Holiday Hug of $5,000 will provide a holiday food voucher to 200 clients this holiday season. The Campbell Foundation’s generosity means sustenance for the body and, knowing that others understand such basic loss, sustenance for the soul,” said Scott Pridgen, executive director of A.H. of Monroe County, which was hard hit by Hurricane Irma.

 

This year, The Campbell Foundation also awarded $315,000 in grant funding for HIV/AIDS research and another $20,000 in emergency grant relief to two Houston, Texas-based AIDS service organizations impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

The Campbell Foundation was established in 1995 by the late Richard Campbell Zahn as a private, independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting clinical, laboratory-based research into the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. It focuses its funding on supporting alternative, nontraditional avenues of research. As the Campbell Foundation prepares to celebrate its 23rd year, it has given away more than $10.7 million dollars, with nearly $1.3 million of that going to direct services.
